Artist Biography

Hendrik Dijk was born in 1948 in Oostmahorn, Friesland, The Netherlands. From early age on he has been painting and drawing. He did his undergraduate studies at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam majoring in architectural design and ceramics. There he studied with the son of Gerrit Rietveld, the architect Jan Rietveld and with ceramist Jan Van Der Vaart. In 1994 he received his MFA at the Graduate School for Figurative Art of the New York Academy of Art in New York City, majoring in painting.

His work was exhibited in The Netherlands, Great Britain, Japan, Germany and the United States. He has work in over 500 public and private collections. His extensive travels - to over 20 countries - gave him the chance to study many different approaches to art.

Since 1986 he lives in Kingston NY with his wife, Maria, and their sons Sjoerd and Raphael. In 1998-2001 they restored an 1851 Italianate firehouse / village hall into their residence and studio. It was featured in This Old House Magazine in December 2001.
